We take accuracy seriously. Every factor is exact by definition, held in one place, and covered by tests. See our methodology. Even so, this is a free reference tool, provided as-is. Some errors would be costly: a trade, a regulated measurement, a medical dose. For those, check against the governing standard and a calibrated instrument.

Precious-metal figures are not valuations

The melt value calculator works out the metal content of an item at a spot price you enter. That number is arithmetic and nothing more. Mass, times purity, divided by the troy ounce, times the price you typed. It is not:

Purity matters a great deal, and it is easy to get wrong. Ten grams of 14K gold holds about 5.83 grams of gold, not ten. If you are unsure what an item is, only an assay by a qualified professional will tell you.

Cooking measurements

Ingredient weights come from published density data. They will not match every brand, grind, or humidity. Flour alone varies by up to 20% depending on how the cup is filled. Where accuracy matters, weigh the ingredient.
