About OZtoGram

The problem

There are two ounces in everyday use. The standard, or avoirdupois, ounce is 28.349523125 grams and governs food, body weight, and packaging. The troy ounce is 31.1034768 grams and governs gold, silver, platinum, and gemstones. They differ by 9.71%.

Almost every unit converter treats “ounce” as one thing. So someone checking what a gold coin weighs gets a number that looks official and is out by about a tenth. So does someone reading a recipe from another country. On a gold purchase that is real money. In a kitchen it is a ruined bake.

What we built instead

OZtoGram shows both readings at once, at the same size, every time. There is a control to say which one you mean. It only decides which reading leads. It never hides the other. If your number could mean either, we say so.

Everything else follows from that. We show the multiplication so you can check it. We publish exact factors rather than rounded ones, and let you turn rounding off. We name our sources on the methodology page. Some units are trade customs rather than standards, like the tola and the three different taels. We say so, instead of picking one and hoping.

What this site deliberately is not

• Not a general unit converter. No volume, temperature, length, or currency. Weight and mass only. Depth over breadth is the whole bet.
• Not a price service. We publish no metal price at all. The melt value calculator asks you for the spot figure, so the result is your arithmetic against a real number rather than ours against a cached one. It is a calculation, not a valuation. • Not an account product. There is nothing to sign up for and nothing to track. See the privacy policy.

How we handle being wrong

A conversion site is only worth using if it is correct. So every number lives in one shared place, and automated checks confirm the definitions still hold. Sixteen ounces to the pound. Four hundred and eighty grains to the troy ounce. If a factor is ever altered by mistake, those checks stop the site publishing rather than letting a wrong answer through.
